Dubai, a city in the United Arab Emirates, ranks as one of the leading world-class tourist, educational, entertainment, and commercial destinations in the Gulf Region. Located in the northwestern part of the country off the Arabian Gulf, Dubai has a total area of 4,114 sq km. It has a population of more than 2.26 million, of which 80% are foreign workers mostly from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and other European countries, thus making itself as the melting pot of diverse cultures. Because of the employment and investment opportunities it offers and the social liberality prevailing, Dubai has proved immensely popular among the migrant workers and foreign investors. Dubai's strategic location in the region has made it a potential regional and international hub of commerce, education, media & communications, fashion and entertainment. The Dubai Media & Internet City established in 2000 has been serving as a regional and international print and broadcast media zones for major organizations like Reuters, MBC, Sony, etc.

About four thousand years ago, there were small fishing villages that thrived along the Arabian Gulf exactly on the site where the present Dubai is. Historical records also mentioned about the town of "Dubai" from 1799, which was a dependent of the settlement of Abu Dhabi until 1833. The then leader of Dubai was a signatory of the British sponsored "General Treaty of Peace" of 1820.

In 1833, the Al Maktoum dynasty of the Bani Yas tribe left the settlement of Abu Dhabi and seized the town of Dubai. This had put the newly independent emirate at war with the emirate of Abu Dhabi. An attempt by the Qawasim pirates to overrun Dubai was quelled. Two years later, in 1835, Dubai and other members of the Trucial States signed a maritime agreement with Britain, and a "Perpetual Maritime Truce" about two decades later. Dubai was placed under the protection of the United Kingdom by the Exclusive Agreement of 1892.

With the visionary leadership of the succeeding rulers, Dubai developed into a growing center of trade and commerce. Notable among these leaders were HH Shaikh Saeed Bin Maktoum who ruled from 1912 to 1958. He was later succeeded by his son, HH Shaikh Rashid Bin Saaed Al-Maktoum, whose leadership saw Dubai rose from a small town to a modern state with excellent communication and industrial infrastructure.

Dubai likewise became an important port for foreign traders, who settled in the town. Until the 1930s, Dubai was known for its pearl exports. International trade to and from Dubai flourished. In 1971, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum is the Prime Minister and Vice-President of the UAE, and the Emir of Dubai. He is the third son of Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum's four sons. He became a respected global leader because of his bold vision in transforming Dubai, then barren land into another world-class city. His dream of transforming Dubai into an "Arab and Muslim success story."
